Community Profile: May Township
BY DEREK HANSELL
Pioneer Press, October 7, 2006

There's not a whole lot going on in May Township. And that is just how residents like it.

"This is the ring (around the Twin Cities) that people want to move out to," Township Clerk Linda Klein said. "They want to have that open space."

May Township, which shares a zip code with nearby Stillwater, is a small rural community that works hard to prevent suburban sprawl from taking over.

"The No. 1 job in the township is maintaining the roads," Klein said.

The community is strictly residential. Builders must purchase a minimum of 10 acres before they can construct a house there. That makes development an expensive proposition and keeps big developers out. According to Klein, there are only about 100 new homes built each year.

New residents are mixing things up a bit, Klein said.

The new and longtime residents get along, for the most part, but some new residents want to change things. So far, that hasn't happened.

Withrow Ballroom, which has dancing and hosts an occasional wedding reception, is the only commercial business that operates in the township. There are no big-box retailers, movie theaters or shopping malls.

If the township board is running everything smoothly, no residents show up to the monthly meetings. But if an issue arises that ruffles some feathers, the board will hear about it.

"We have a very politically active community," Klein said.

In fact, almost 87 percent of May Township residents turned out for the general presidential election in 2004, according to Carol Peterson, the elections director for Washington County.

The attention to policy seems to be as hectic as life gets in this place.

"It's a very beautiful area," Klein said, bragging about the scenic road she lives on. "A lovely little pocket."
